Influence of hospital insertion on nasal colonization of Staphylococcus aureus in students of medicine

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus colonizes the skin of about one third world's population, locating main lyon nasal region (35%) and perianal region (20%). Although, it is widely discussed in the literature the highest prevalence of S. aureus, particularly MRSA, on health care professionals, exceeding 20%. These employees of the hospital, silent carriers of S. aureus, are considered a major source of nosocomial infection. In this context, there is the student of medicine, who is intensively exposed to several kinds of microorganisms, and it can be also an important vector of hospital infections. To evaluate the prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA nasal colonization, its variation according to insertion in hospital promoted along medical course, risk factors for nasal carriage, MRSA's genotyping and dissemination among close or household contacts; we will perform a cross-sectional study enrolling60 medicine students from each first, third and sixth years. Anterior nasal secretions will be seed to investigate S. aureus and antimicrobial sensitivity. AllMRSA will be genotyped for SCCmec and explored its prevalence among household and close contacts. In parallel, demographic, behavior and medical course related variables will be explored to adjust those prevalences by multiple logistic regression. (AU)
