Abstract

This study will evaluate the effect of different doses of monensin on performance, feeding behavior, carcass characteristics, ruminal and health feedlot Nellore. 60 animals of Nellore bulls will be used, with average weight of 370 kg, coming from system under grazing conditions. The animals are divided into five treatments according to the dosage of monensin used: 1) Control, 2) 9 mg / kg, 3) 18 mg / kg, 4) 27 mg / kg and 5) 36 mg / kg, characterized randomized block design, where each treatment will have 12 animals (one animal / cage, and the experimental unit). At the beginning of the trial and every 28 days, all animals will be weighed. The dry matter intake will be measured every day, and then calculate the average daily weight gain and feed conversion. Likewise, the animals will be assessed with ultrasound at the beginning and end of the period of confinement for evaluation of the deposition of muscle and fat, being slaughtered in commercial abattoir when reaching average final weight of 490 kg after 84 days supply. Also this project will be evaluated as response variables: 1) feeding behavior and selectivity of the diet, 2) fluctuation of dry matter intake, 3) morphology in terms of macroscopic and microscopic ruminal epithelium as number and area of papillae per cm2e absorptive surface area and 4) histology of the ruminal epithelium as height and thickness of the papillae, keratin layer thickness, and mitotic index, 5) incidence of liver abscesses and rumenites; 6) carcass characteristics.
