Abstract

Advances in Analytical Chemistry and Molecular Biology allowed the correlation between anthropic compounds in low concentrations and biological effects observed in humans, aquatic organisms and plants. Nowadays, it is known that several classes of contaminants are found in surface waters, sewage and water treatment plants, posing risks even in very low concentrations (ng L-1). Conventional biological treatment processes do not remove completely these contaminants. Thus, this project aims at studying the best coupling conditions between anaerobic-aerobic and homogeneous photo-Fenton, and heterogeneous Fenton processes for degrading pharmaceuticals which are widely consumed and frequently found in sewage. Degradation experiments will be performed with sewage as a matrix aiming at complying with current legislation, as well as the production of water for reuse. The degradation products may be also identified, providing information for the improvement of the studied processes, as well as possible correlations with observed biological effects.
