Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the gabapentin treatment as an adjuvant for postoperative control pain in dogs. Twenty female dogs undergoing unilateral mastectomy will be distributed into two groups of ten dogs each: G1: oral gabapentin treatment (10mg kg-1), 60 minutes before surgery, followed by administration of the same dose every 24 hours for 3 days; G2: placebo treatment, administered as described to G1 treatment. All dogs will be sedated with intramuscular acepromazine maleate (0.03mg kg-1) in combination with morphine (0.5mg kg-1). After twenty minutes, the intravenous (iv) constant rate infusion of morphine (0.1mg kg-1 h-1) will be started and it will be maintained for all the surgery. Anesthesia will be induced with propofol (4mg kg-1iv) and maintained with isoflurane. Five minutes before the surgical incision, meloxicam (0.2mg kg-1, iv) will be administered. Heart rate, respiratory rate, systolic arterial blood pressure, oxicapnografy and rectal temperature will be evaluated during the surgery. Postoperative analgesia will be assessed at 30 minutes, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 18, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, and 72 hours after the tracheal extubation using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Glasgow Short Scale (GSS). The sedation degree will be evaluated with a scoring system. Numerical data will be submitted to analysis of variance followed by Tukey's test for parametric measures and Kruskall-Wallis with a post-Dunn test for nonparametric measures.(AU)
