Abstract

This study will investigate the corrosion behavior of commercially pure titanium (cpTi) with different surfaces such as machined and modified by treatment with double acid-etching, on simulator body fluids (SFC) with different concentrations of dextrose (0; 5 mM, 7.5 mM and 15 mM) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (0; 0.15 µg/mL; 15 µg/mL; 150 µg/mL). The hypothesis to be tested is that the double acid-etching surface treatment will generate a different pattern of corrosion from that observed in the machined surface in both the combination of dextrose and LPS, and when these substances are evaluated separately. Further, it is hypothesized that the presence of dextrose and LPS will decrease the corrosion resistance of cpTi. CpTi disks will be fabricated with different surfaces as described above. For electrochemical assay (n = 5), open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic tests will be conducted in SBF with different concentrations of dextrose and LPS. The corrosion current density (Icorr), the passivation current density (Ipass), the corrosion potential (Ecorr), capacitance (Cdl) and polarization resistance (Rp) of Ti oxide layer will be determined. The surfaces of the disks will be characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and by surface roughness and microhardness. The energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) will be used to evaluate the composition of the oxides formed on the cpTi surface. The obtained quantitative data will be statistically analyzed with the appropriate test with a significance level of 5%.
