Abstract

Propolis is a resinous product made by bees from different plants. In recent years, its biological activities, such as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory have been intensely investigated. Data from the literature concerning the action of propolis and its isolated components were obtained mainly in vitro or using experimental animals. Our project aims to understand the synergistic action of propolis components using human monocytes from healthy individuals. The action of three phenolic compounds found in propolis (cinnamic acid, p-coumaric acid, and caffeic acid), and combinations of these constituents will be tested according to the concentration found in propolis, to identify the synergistic action responsible for propolis action. A possible cytotoxic activity of the compounds will be assessed on these cells. The production of anti- and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10 and TNF-±) by monocytes will be evaluated after incubation with the compounds, as well as the bactericidal activity of these cells against Escherichia coli. The comprehension of the mechanism of action of propolis and its compounds may be useful for the development of new products by the pharmaceutical industry since propolis has been widely used by humans.(AU)
