Abstract

The vitreous carbon (VC) consists of a material with unique and specific properties for application in different areas. Due to its low density (~1,5 g.cm-3), good thermal and electrical properties and high chemical inertness, the VC has been used in the crucibles processing for specials purposes, substrates for first surface mirrors, heart valves, electrodes, and among others. The phenolic and furfuryl alcohol resins are thermosetting resins commonly used in the processing of this type of carbonaceous material, because they have carbon yield at around 40%. However, studies have been conducted in the search for polymers with higher carbon yield in order to optimize the process of obtaining this carbonaceous material, and mainly decrease the presence of pores and residual stress in the VC. The polyarylacetylene (PAA) resin is an advantageous alternative when compared to the previously mentioned resins, as this promotes a cure with low elimination of volatiles and show a carbon yield at around 80%. This research project aims to synthesize and characterize the PAA resin and then obtain the parameters of the resin cure for the CVM processing. The possibility of obtaining exceptional properties with the PAA for the CV application in sophisticated systems, such as aerospace sector, makes the high cost of the synthesis of this resin advantageous in relation to the final properties achieved. The comprehension of the relationship between the structure of precursory polymeric resin, the chemistry of carbonization and the final properties of the material obtained will be essential to optimize the processing for the application of vitreous carbon in strategic areas.
