Abstract

The genus Heliura Butler, 1876 counts with 41 species and has never been revised. This project is part of the revision of Heliura, currently in course, and proposes research stage at the most important European collections to accomplish the needs of every good taxonomic work. This need is due to three of the most fundamental activities in a taxonomic revision - the study of type specimens, study of every species currently in the genus (not all of them were available at the collections already visited) and revision of all the literature available for the group - as well as other important activities that render the work more robust, such as the study of as many specimens as possible, to investigate the existence of intraspecific variation. This kind of study constitutes part of the effort to build a general reference system for biological diversity, which is the very basis of taxonomic work and especially needed in the case of little studied groups. The project proposes a five-month stay abroad, divided as follows: first three months at the British Museum of Natural History (London), and the last two at the other large European collections - Museum für Tierkunde (Dresden); Museum Natural d'Histoire Naturelle (Paris); Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (Vienna); University Museum of Natural History (Oxford); Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde (Stuttgart); Russian Academy of Sciences, Zoological Institute (St. Petersburg); Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität (Berlin); University of Copenhagen, Zoological Museum (Copenhagen); Zoologische Staatssammlung (Munich).
