Abstract

The diversity of tribe Oryzomyini (near 30 genera and 125 species) is growing substantially in last years with description of new genera and species, as a consequence of species inventory and taxonomic reviews. The genus Nectomys, whose last taxonomic review was published in 1944, is a taxon that needs to be revised taxonomically. Since 1944, a lot of specimens were collected and deposited in zoological collections, especially in Brazil. The Brazilian collections were studied during the first year of my doctorate project; the North American collections, although do not have recent series of Nectomys, are an indispensable part for an adequate analysis of taxonomic diversity of genus, considering that they harbor a high quantity of specimens from several countries of Latin America and several type specimens also. The goals of this proposal are to examine and describe quanti- and qualitatively the specimens from North American Institutions; map the geographic distribution of these individuals; photograph the type material; and assemble tissue (muscle or liver) for molecular analyses. For this, my head office will be the American Museum of Natural History, under supervision of Dr. Robert Voss; thereafter, I will visit other four important institutions (MVZ, MCZ, FMNH, USNM). Specimens will be evaluated about their morphology (external and internal), and about their dimensions (external and cranio-dental) and will be photographed. (AU)
