Abstract The present project fully integrates the candidate doctoral project, whose main target is the production of new materials based on starch modification via reactive extrusion. It is recognized that any thermoplastic starch (TPS) usage increase depends on the development of new alternatives, capable of providing new properties to this material. The main challenge related to TPS is to enhance its mechanical properties, dimensional stability and water resistance. Therefore, a TPS modification producing a cross-linked material, which is thermo-reversible, is extremely attractive and innovative, since two properties, namely recyclability and biodegradability, are introduced into this novel material. Thus, the proposal intends to complement the work carried out in Brazil joining the experience so far acquired here, with the supervision of Doctor Naceur Mohamed Belgacem (INPG - Grenoble - France) who has extensive experience in the Diels-Alder (DA) thermo-reversible reactions involving furan polymers. Furthermore, the student will have access to experimental resources not available in the Brazilian laboratory, including the use of a micro-extruder system. There are two proposed routes for furfuryl alcohol (FA) modified starch production i) a diisocyanate in order to produce urethane, linking FA to the starch and ii) via esterification with citric acid (CA). The cross-linking of the modified materials will then carried out by the DA reaction with a bismaleimide. The student experience on the reactive extrusion of starch in the presence of CA and MDI will be essential, but the study involving the thermoreversible DA reactions will be facilitated by the experience of the French partner, who participated on the elaboration of the present project. The concepts associated with this investigation have not been published previously.Key-words: Thermoplastic starch, reactive extrusion, thermo-reversible cross-linking, furan (AU) | |
