Abstract

Boudica, Breton Queen of the tribe of Iceni, led a rebellion against the Roman Empire during its invasion of the ancient Britain. Her acts of war were first hand written by Tacitus (1914, 1968) and Cassius Dio (1925) that were from a society incapable to accept a woman as an army commander. However, those ancient texts were read and reread for many centuries after that time and the same history was rewritten and told for many times in different ways. The creativity of some information, in these texts, were common because they were Works like poems, plays, sculptures, books, paintings, politician Works, until charges that involved the feminine figure of Boudica. Thus, she was used to be compared with Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Margaret Thatcher and to add, she was, in many times, described as a masculinized woman and, in the others, as a zealous mother. Hence, the objective of this study is to analyse the three statues of her, which are in the cities of London, Cardiff and Colchester, the stained Glass window in the Town Hall of the last city and the Colchester Castle Museum. The intention is to explore a web of symbolic aspects, which the society is involved before this figure and those actions that refers to feminists and nationalist's movements. (AU)
