Abstract

This project proposes a research in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Manchester (SEEE), in the particularly topics of power quality (PQ) and distribution network planning. This project aims to study in more detail an important and crucial step to be addressed by the researcher during his postdoctoral research at the University of São Paulo. This step includes the development of a methodology for assessment of PQ costs at each consumer supplied by the distribution network. Additionally, it will be properly integrated within the classical multistage expansion planning. Regarding the PQ assessment, the long duration interruptions and short duration voltage variations (voltage sags and swells) caused by short circuits along the network will be emphasised. During the research, different planning alternatives predefined in the previous steps of the postdoctoral process will be used. Three important topics will be dealt with: i) defining the sensitivity curves of PQ phenomena for groups of equipment of the same type, ii) defining types of common commercial and industrial processes and, iii) obtaining sensitivity curves of processes in function of the equipment that constitute them. The improvement of these topics would result in a methodology to estimate the PQ costs closer to reality and, consequently, comprehensive planning alternatives for any electrical distribution network considering their impact on vulnerable consumers.
