Abstract

Among several biometric traits, the fingerprint is still the most used for human identification. The automatic fingerprint recognition systems are based on ridges (first level features), and, mainly, in minutia, such as ridge bifurcations and terminations (second level features). With the development of high-resolution fingerprint sensors and the high demand for more secure systems, nowadays it is possible to use an additional set of fingerprint features such as the perspiration pores (third level features). Recent research on fingerprint recognition has focused on the development of extraction and matching of pores from partial fingerprints since in these cases, the small number of minutia points does not allow a proper fingerprint recognition. Therefore, the use of third-level features is highly recommended. In addition, recent research has also focused on multibiometrics recognition due to its many advantages. The goal of this research project is to apply fusion techniques for fingerprint recognition in order to combine minutia, ridges, and pore-based methods and, thus, provide more robust biometrics recognition systems.(AU)
