Abstract

The researches about insects mating systems allow us to understand all aspects of reproductive behavior evolution. These studies approach the mating behavior as well as the effect of his components on the species bioecology. The information and knowledge acquired from these researches are the base for the development of management techniques for agricultural pests. However, there is a lack of research dealing with species like coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari). When each female has multiple matings with different males, the mating system is called Polyandry. Another insect behavior is repeated matings, which each female has multiple matings with the same male. Previous studies showed that females of coffee berry borer present the behavior of multiple mating. Therefore, there is the hypothesis of occurrence of polyandry and/or repeated mating on coffee berry borer females. For other species there are several studies pointing the positive and negative aspects of these mating systems on the female and her offspring. Nevertheless there is not enough information about the mating systems and their effects on coffee berry borer females. Therefore, this research aim to study the mating system of H. hampei females, verifying the existence of polyandry and evaluating the effects of the multiple mating rates on the bioecology of female and its offspring.
