Pilot project to compare clinical, laboratory and pathological findings in the occurrence or not of atrial fibrillation after on and off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery

Abstract

The prevalence of atrial fibrillation in patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery is 11 to 40%.(1) (2). This arrhythmia is associated with a series of complications such as hemodynamic instability, myocardial ischemia, and thrombotic events, as well as an increase in long-term mortality rate after the surgery (2) (3) (4) (5). Although the pathogenesis of the AF in this situation isn´t completely understood, studies indicate that factors such as age, presence of inflammation, and atrial remodeling have been correlated with the development of this arrhythmia (6). Therefore, this will be a pilot study to help to determine which clinical, laboratory, and pathological findings can be correlated with the occurrence of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. In order to do it, we will invite to this study patients who will be submitted to coronary artery bypass surgery and register their clinical data and laboratory exam findings. It will also be performed the collection of biopsy species of the right and left atrial appendage for the register of histological and inflammatory biomarkers. The collected data will then be used in a series of statistical tests to determine the correlation between them and the occurrence of postoperative AF.(AU)
