Abstract

Mário Pedrosa and Sérgio Buarque de Holanda intellectuals were engaged in politics and the arts. Produced important reflection on Brazilian society and cast deep roots in our culture: the basis for the activities of groups of artists, intellectuals and politicians.This research aims to study the ideas and attitudes of these two scholars in relation to museums where they served as directors or employees. As a result, the period studied goes from the 1950s to 1980s, the post Second World War to an end the military dictatorship in Brazil. It focuses on the process of creation of the Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of São Paulo (1963). In the controversy over the creation of this museum faced divergent conceptions of these two thinkers.Sérgio Buarque, working more behind the scenes, participate and encourages the collection of MAM-SP trip to the University of São Paulo. Contrary to donate Mario Pedrosa MAM-SP thought that could still be funded by the private sector, civil society.The research will focus on the role of these two scholars worked in museums where, in periods preceding and following the foundation of the MAC-USP. With respect to Sérgio Buarque can cite, the board of the Museu Paulista, the Institute of Brazilian Studies at USP-IEB, his collaboration with the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of the MAE-USP, is vice president of MAMSP and participates in the Council MAC-USP. On the other hand, Mário Pedrosa MAM-SP was director of the Museum of the Unconscious Nise da Silveira and Museo de la Solidaridad in Chile as well as founder of several museums proposals.The research aims to contribute to the knowledge of these exciting historical facts and little studied.This research aims to contribute to understanding the role of SBH and MP in the formation of modern thought from Brazilian to his views and actions in museums.
