Abstract

It is a long-term technical visit to the Department of Marine Technology NTNU in Trondheim. NTNU is the top Norwegian university in engineering, graduating more than 80% of Norway's Master and PhD in Science and Technology per year. The Department of Marine Technology is among the largest marine departments in the world annually graduating about 100 MSc candidates and PHDs, supporting the industries and governmental interest in maritime, offshore oil & gas, fisheries & aquaculture, offshore renewable energy and ocean science. Currently more than 100 candidates from all over the world carry out their PhD degree at the Department of Marine Technology and the associated Centre of Excellence "Centre for Ships and Ocean Structures - CeSOS". CeSOS was established in 2002 as a world leading research centre aiming to develop fundamental knowledge about how ships and other structures behave in the ocean environment, using analytical, numerical and experimental studies integrating the disciplines of hydrodynamics, structural mechanics and automatic control. Two years ago CeSOS and Department of Marine Technology recruited for PhD study one of my MSc student, Daniel de Almeida Fernandes, from Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil. By now, I am also acting as cosupervisor for the PhD of Daniel. Besides of strengthen the Brazilian - Norwegian relationships on higher education and research we will in particular address joint research interests related to 'hybrid guidance controllers' of underwater vehicles such as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). During my stay I will do several meetings with Prof. Sorensen, to address issues relating to control of marine systems, especially systems for dynamic positioning of vessels and control systems for autonomous submersibles. Also will participate in two campaigns at sea , for testing of submersible vehicles , one in development at NTNU as part of the doctoral student Daniel and the other, REMUS100, purchased from Konsberg Industries (a world leader in marine control systems).Finally , I will participate in various discussions on the progress of the Daniel's thesis .
