Abstract

Sepsis and its complication are recognized as one of the major causes of death in patients admitted in intensive care units (ICU). Its pathophysiology is partly elucidated: its a process that involves the interaction of components immunologic, hemodynamic, endocrine and genetic, to infectious components, with the exaggerated production of inflamatory mediators, unbalancing physiological functions. The incriese of plasma vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OT)on the ealry phase of sepsis occurs, probably, to attempt to control the arterial pressure that is found decreased. On the late phase the pacients presents normal level of plasmatic AVP and OT, even in a progressive state of hypotension. The increase of plasmatic osmolality, hypotension and hypovolemia are the most strong stimuli for the release of AVP and OT. Recent studies suggest that some pacients in the ICU that survived sepsis presented impairment of cognitive functions in long term, and also impairment in quality of life. Was observed the presence of cognitive impairment and deppressive behavior in sepsis surviving rats after cecal ligation and puncture. However it is yet unknown if there is a neuroendocrine impairment in those pacients. The objective of this project will be to verify if there is a impairment of the pituitary-hypothalamic axis leading to alterations in the secretion of AVP and OT after osmotic and hypovolemic stimuli in sepsis surviving animals.
