Relations of temporomandibular disorders in dentofacial deformities

Abstract

There is an intrinsic relationship between the TMD and the conditions of the facial skeleton and dental occlusion, however, the relationship between cause and effect is not well understood. Objective: To analyze the prevalence and severity of TMD in subjects with dentofacial deformities (with an indication for orthognathic surgery). Patients and Methods: Participants in the study, 60 patients, and young adults between 18 and 40 years, of both genders, 30 with class II dentofacial deformity (characterized by mandibular retrognathia and/or excessive maxillary growth), and 30 with class III (characterized by mandible prognathism and/or maxillary deficiency, with more anterior mandible relative to the maxillary). The subjects will be examined, according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders RDC / TMD - Axis I (Dworkin and Leresche, 1992), by calibrated examiners. The DTMs are classified according to the RDC / TMD in muscle (group I), Group disc displacement with reduction (IIa) without reduction (IIb), arthralgia, arthritis, osteoarthritis (group III) according to the predominant characteristics and may include subclassifications. The subjects will respond to the questionnaire about signs and symptoms - ProDTMmulti - Part II, where they must indicate how much each sign or symptom is severe upon waking, when chewing, speaking, and at rest, using a numerical scale.(AU)
