Abstract

From a previous study entitled "The invisibility of incarcerated women: the repercussions of social exclusion in the lives of inmates of the Women's Public Jail Franca" detected the need to study more deeply this very segment within the Prison System: a woman responsible for a female single parent family. The entry of women heads of household in prison is often related to the need to find that she has "livelihoods" to respond financially for maintaining the home and family, since the woman in many ways, is comprised of lower form in our society (which still bears traces patriarchal). This figure and his family are more intense and seriously affected by the consequences of the prison, since, due to lack of public policies aimed at this segment of society, the family, having their main provider (social, financial, psychological, educational) trapped , finds himself subject to the solidarity of the family network, neighbors and closest friends. In prison, the inmate is hit by problems related to poor structure and operation of the Prison which results in overcrowding, inadequate medical care, delays in the judiciary, lack of work and education, among others. Thus, this study aims, through a quantitative and qualitative approach, identifying the consequences of prison in female single-parent family whose mother is secluded and the existence of a network of social or family network that can support the family in the absence of its main figure provider.
