Abstract

This project aims to study Horizontal Gene Transfer in prokaryotes using phylogenomic networks. In a phylogenomic network nodes represent genomes and edges between nodes represent shared gene families. We plan to extend standard networks by the addition of phenotypic and ecological metadata. In addition we plan to focus the network analysis on certain classes of genes, in particular type III system secreted effectors and genes related to nitrogen fixation. The main contributions expected in this work are a methodology to efficiently incorporate metadata into phylogenomic networks, new algorithms and programs to analyze such extended networks, and new discoveries about gene flow in the biosphere.
