Abstract

This research intends to analyze a group of poems chosen in the book O Jardim das confidências (1921), written by Rui Ribeiro Couto. Literary history usually identifies Couto´s book to a period of indistincted literary practices that took place amongst Brazilian writers in the two first decades of twentieth century. Many scholars, anyway, have described the presence in Couto´s poems of procedures and techniques usually associated to modernist poets. Some studies even mention what could have been Couto´s participation in a kind of construction of modernist style. This project doesn´t assume a kind of teleological argument that should consider the possibility of a literature that antecipates projects born in a posterior moment. What is proposed is a study of two poetic procedures and its literary profits in the book selected to exam. These two procedures are poetic rhythm and images of space. Both of them will be studied in selected poems, as well as in the whole of the book. The research will be concluded with an attempt to start a general view of the structure of the book in order to detect possible organization principles of the whole. This last task is a preparation for future developments of this research and takes the particular studies of poems as a point of depart. (AU)
