Hybridization between analogical and digital drawing and its contribution in the architectural projective process

Abstract

This project is part of the studies and activities that are being developed in N.elac (Support Center for Research in Language Studies in Architecture and City) of the Instituto de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo - São Carlos. The group conducts research topics related to language and representation with emphasis on the cognitive processes present in both the perception of the city and architecture, as in projective processes. It aims to characterize the different theoretical and practices perspectives that exist in relation between the means of representation and the teaching of Architecture and Urbanism, observing the procedural and methodological relations between them. Extension activities, developed by the group, constitute the scope of research aimed at questioning the boundaries and functions of the assumptions made. Thus, the objective is to highlight the links between the means of representation, artistic or not, and the critical awareness of spatiality proposal, whether urban or architectural. This project specifically is linked with the research line "Media representation in Architecture and the City" (Coordinator: Simone Helena Tanoue Vizioli), which aims to discuss the role of traditional drawing and the new digital means (tablets) in the projective process and in the acknowledgment of the way of architectural thinking. It is intended to embrace experimentation as a possible field to catch events that contribute to this debate. This is a research field where multiple logical thoughts interact with each other and are able to develop a new approach in the cognitive processes. It configures a space for reflection about the process of the act of drawing in order to constitute an specifically way of looking. The current globalized world is marked by an abundance of visual communication media and entertainment industry, resulting from technological progress. These ingredients mark a perspective guided by the image, which exalts the spectacle and the ephemeral. It is understood, however, a revival of the discussion and the appreciation of the inherent qualities of the handmade design processes in design projects, whether in the field of architecture or in the field of design. After certain euphoria in the use of digital design aid programs, the debate begins to address the functions of the details of each gender of design, and highlight the return to the freehand drawing at the early stages of the development of the project. Research hypothesis: despite the fact that the means of representation innovate and technologies develop rapidly, the freehand drawings, sketches or drafts, are and will be remain a key intellectual resource in the architectural projective process. From this assumption, the means of free digital design widen the universe of varieties and possibilities between the stages of creation and reduction, swinging between mind / body, between the idea and representation, specific of the making of sketches. Hybridization is one of the answers to the necessities and potentialities in the process of designing. Goals: this study aims to systematize an analysis at the freehand drawing on projective process, considering the complexity marked by the hybridization between analog and digital means. In this operative explosion caused by the computer use, guided by the pursuit of figurative perfection through virtual reality, there has been a duality in drawing. The comparative study is separated in the pure analogical media, drawing on paper, and digital processes of capture of drawing gesture, with the aim of catching new qualitative relationships between the means of representation and the cognitive process characteristic of the act of designing.
