Abstract

This study is going to be an empirical research in the Extractive Reserve (RESEX) "Lago do Cuniã", located at Rondônia state, Brazilian Amazon. In this protected area there are around 350 riverine inhabitants, and it is considered that the local elementary school must dialog with the traditional culture of these people to exist a real valorization of their culture. The main question of this study is "How the school of RESEX "Lago do Cuniã" is dialoguing with the traditional culture of the community residing in the locality?". The theoretical and methodological foundations are based on Popular Education and Participatory Research . In the first part of the study, which has been performed and is on stage of systematization, the researcher lived with people in the community toward a closer contact with the research participants, and better understanding of reality. The second part will feature the school while empirical space and focus on understanding how cultural elements appear in this space if, and how, are they related to teaching practices. The techniques of survey data will be participant observation (with systematic daily records), and interviews with six teachers and the school principal. Data to be triangulated along the information acquired through the literature review. The reality described will be analyzed using mainly the concepts of culture in Geertz, and ideology in Marx.
