Abstract

Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) is a member of family Herpesviridae, subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae, is the etiological agent of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis/Infectious Pustular Vulvovaginitis (IBR/IPV) and is able to remain in a state of latency, lodging in nervous ganglia, especially the trigeminal and sacral. The BoHV-1 infection is present enzootic in most countries where cattle ranching is practiced, although there are differences in prevalence and incidence. In Brazil the virus is present in the herd in an endemic form, affecting over 75% in some areas. In Europe, due to the large economic losses in the cattle industry, has been installed a control system based vaccines, inactivated or attenuated, with deletions in the gene for glycoprotein E (gE) and that is associated with serologic tests, allowing differentiation between infected and vaccinated cattle. However the induction of latency by BoHV-1 and the emergence of intra and interspecific viral mutations among Alphaherpesvirus concerns are relevant. (AU)
