Abstract

During the development of the articulated laticifers, new cells are added to the system, including parenchyma cells (differentiated tissues), and ground meristem cells (undifferentiated tissues). However, we have found no studies that demonstrate the redifferentiation of parenchyma cells in laticers. Several lines of evidence have showed that the latex production is affected by biotic and abiotic conditions, among them herbivory pressure. Some hormones released during the herbivory, as ethylene and jasmonic acid, appear to stimulate the differentiation of this secretory structures. In laticifers, the jasmonic acid seems to be more involved in this process. Aiming to understand important aspects of the differentiation of laticifers, using immunocytochemical techniques and conventional (brightfield and confocal) light and transmission electron microscopy, we intend to answer the following questions: 1. Do parenchyma cells added to the laticifer system redifferentiate in laticifers or are as a deposit for latex, which had no structural relevant changing? 2. Are ethylene and jasmonic acid related to the differentiation of the primary and secondary laticifer system of plants?
