Abstract

The main objective of the research is the application (programming in Matlab) of the basic (multiple specimens) and the normalization methods from ASTM E1820 standard to the determination of J-R curves of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). This study is part of a larger scientific project that aims to develop theoretical models for the simulation of the PTFE processing (compaction and sintering) and its in-service mechanical behavior, supported by an international cooperation program (Capes-Cofecub 641-09) among researchers from LMT-Cachan (France), EESC-USP and DEMa-UFSCar. Uniaxial tensile and CT (compact tension) specimens will be prepared under controlled conditions of isostatic compaction (in multiple steps) and sintering. This type of processing allows obtaining an isotropic material with a reduced number of defects (voids, macrocracks, and microcracks). Uniaxial tensile tests will be performed using the digital image correlation technique (DIC) for the measurement of some mechanical properties required for the application of ASTM-E1820 standard. The J-R curve of the normalization method - which requires a monotonic test in a CT specimen- will be compared with another curve, obtained from multiple specimens, by interrupting the loading to measure crack extension. The J-R curves of the two methods will be compared and the application of the linear normalization method will be evaluated against the traditional basic method (multiple specimens).(AU)
