Abstract

According to many researchers there is a strong association between frailty in elderly people of both sexes and adverse health outcomes, functional decline, dependency, recurrent falls, fractures, institutionalization, hospitalization and mortality. Thus, this study aims to describe the incidence of frailty in elderly people living in the community and the association of it with adverse outcomes, hospitalization and institutionalization. This is a follow-up study (2008-2013) through two waves of cross-sectional cohort survey with 515 elderly people aged 65 or over living at home, in the city of Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo. For that, sociodemographic, cognitive, self-reported morbidity, frailty, functional independence, hospitalization and institutionalization data will be collected through structured interviews. The data will be inserted in the EXCEL spreadsheet, which will be filled out using validation technique for double entry (typing) and subsequently imported into SPSS software (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows version 15.0. Quantitative variables will be analyzed employing measures of central tendency, of dispersion and of proportions for categorical variables. For qualitative variables, specific tests will be performed such as a comparison test of means among groups of elderly people, test of correlation between the measures of interest and measures of association in contingency tables. For the final analysis the main outcome will be used multiple logistic regression. (AU)
