Abstract

With the profusion of digital cameras in cell phones and other electronic devices the number of amateur videos that report facts that are relevant to the media is growing - these facts are here referred to as events. The availability of such videos to the public imposes challenges, given that: 1. These images are used to report recent facts and are shared and accessed online or reported by the "greater" media; 2. They are perceived as truthful testimony from inside the event, a form of indisputable truth and reality broadcasting; 3. These videos bring about new elements in the study of representation and presentation of reality via technical images, an ongoing debate for over a century which has been renewed with the recent plethora of new realistic aesthetic. The objective of this research is to answer: what is the ontological status of the amateur videos of events, considering the material and technical realities of such an image, the specific condition under which the video was produced, distributed, stored and received, as well as the historical and cultural setting? The goal of this study is to, through literature research, add historical and cultural perspective to these images, expose the context in which these images were taken and disseminated, and place them within the traditional image theory. The empirical stage of this study will consist of analysis of a subset of videos. (AU)
