Abstract

Based on ethnographic research in Moroccan women rights nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and on interviews with activists in different regions of the country, I analyze the experiences and strategies of women working in NGOs to fight violence against women. The study reflects on the role of activists as mediators of a rights-based language between the local population, governmental institutions, and international funding agencies. The aim is to explore how notions of violence and rights are conceived and mobilized by these women and how their work it influenced by local and transnational factors, including religious language and human rights discourses. This work hopes to contribute to anthropological reflections on how rights networks of global reach are articulated in specific contexts. (AU)
