Abstract

Researchers have highlighted the importance of improving the quality of agricultural systems, mitigating greenhouse gases emissions to the atmosphere and increasing soil carbon (C) sequestration. Accordingly, many studies have proven the efficiency of biochar application to soil in order to improve C sequestration and chemical, physical and biological soil properties, resulting in higher yields and soil quality. This research aims to assess the benefits of biochar application to soils in sugarcane areas in relation to changes in chemical, physical and biological soil properties, crop productivity, and mitigation of greenhouse gases emissions (GHG). We hope that the results of this research will give important information to benefit not only sugarcane production systems but also other crops as a whole, combining higher energetic efficiency and mitigation of greenhouse gases emissions.
