Abstract

Directed self-assembly of nanoparticles is a new challenge in the field of nanotechnology, increasing the relevance of researches involving interparticle interactions and, as a consequence, making physical chemistry of colloids essential to nanoscience. In this context, the present project seeks applying the group's experience in physical chemistry of polymers and surfactants in solution in order to direct stabilization and aggregation of nanoparticles in dispersion, so that the individual and collective properties are explored in a controlled way. The employ of gold nanoparticles will provide interesting characteristics to the systems due to the optical and electronic properties related to localized surface plasmon resonance. Nanoparticles will be coated by a cationic surfactant and several polyelectrolytes - homo- or copolymers with different architectures. In addition to direct the self-assembly of nanoparticles, variations in polymer structure will be used to control characteristics of the formed cluster, such as ordering and interparticle distance, and properties of the systems, such as thermosensitivity. If the strategies succeed, one will be able to control optical and electronic properties of nanoparticles systems changing molecular structure of polymers used as coatings. (AU)
