Abstract

This research project aims to nuance the understanding of slavery in nineteenth-century Brazil, through a serial analysis of two of the basic elements of economics and demographics of slavery - the ownership structure of slaves and the slave family - in Grão-Pará, along the nineteenth century. The research focuses on population dynamics and on the patterns of slaveholding, as well as the mechanisms of reproduction and the possible stability of the slave family in three regions of the province that experienced, each of them, distincts demo-economic processes: the Guajarina Zone that covered the capital, Belém, and its surroundings; the Lower Tocantins and Marajó. The project is supported into a kind of principal source (postmortem inventories) and other auxiliary sources (parish registers, wills, public deeds of sale, listas de matrícula, criminal and civil cases; censuses, reports of provincial administration, travelers reports etc.).
