Abstract

The fishes of the class Chondrichthyes correspond to an ancient and well succeeded group that has shown significant modifications on skeletal structure of fins from the Paleozoic until the present day. The morphology of fins has important consequences in the manner that its representatives explore the resources on the environment. A thorough anatomical analysis based on the skeletal structure of paired fins and their girdles in Chondrichthyes is necessary to understand certain factors that influenced their evolution. The doctorate project entailed to the present proposal aims to describe and illustrate the skeletal structure of paired fins and girdles of representatives of families of Chondrichthyes and raise new skeletal characters that can be phylogenetically informative to the elucidation of the interrelationships within the class. The viability of this project depends thus in the realization of collection studies in international institutions for the analysis of pertinent material consisting of taxa not represented in national collections, covering all possible families within Chondrichthyes. In the present proposal is presented the request for international grant research program (BEPE) for the realization of anatomical study in the California Academy of Sciences (CAS). From the CAS, the candidate will request the loan of pertinent material as well as the realization of short visits to other North American institutions for the analysis of comparative material. (AU)
