Abstract

Objectives: to establish reference intervals for the acute-phase proteins HMGB1 in mares with or without uterine fluid accumulation; and determine whether the local immune response is Th1, Th2, or Tr1 by measuring cytokines in the uterine fluid of these mares. Animals: 12 Quarter Horse mares. Procedures: Uterine fluid from calves with or without uterine fluid accumulation will be evaluated for determination of acute-phase protein HMGB1 concentrations on days 0 (ovulation), and 2, 3, 4, and 5 days after ovulation. Data from the 2 groups will be compared. Clinical relevance: Reference values for the acute-phase protein HMGB1 in mares with or without uterine fluid accumulation will be determined; and the type of T cell response (Th1, Th2, or Tr1) in the uterus will be determined by measuring a cytokine profile in these animals.(AU)
