Abstract

The aim of this study is to understand the meanings of the picture painted by José Correia de Lima, 'Retrato do Intrépido Marinheiro Simão, carvoeiro do vapor Pernambucana' (1853-57). This study deals with the iconography of black people in the mid-nineteenth century when the picture was painted. It points to the uniqueness of this workout, both in regard to the iconography of black and the artist's option on choosing the portrait genre. We seek to understand what the motivation for painting this emblematic work was; which is surrounded by several hypotheses and speculation. This research also intends to approach the recent visual studies, which are growing increasingly engaged in the research around the image and the visual. These studies understand images not as mere illustrations or objects that have meanings for themselves, but as documents and evidence, which we study the society and its cultural productions.(AU)
