Abstract

The objective of the project is to identify the places of floods in the urban area of São Paulo city, between 1875 and 1906, to investigate their causes and social consequences. The results obtained in the research will be utilized by Grupo de Pesquisa CNPq Hímaco, composed by the researchers of Departamento de História da EFLCH/UNIFESP, that, in partnership with Núcleo de Acervo Cartográfico do Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo intends to offer, by the systems of geographical information (SIG), a digital cartographic base of São Paulo city from the end of the 19th century to middles of the 20th century, with the construction of a plan of information regarding the floods. The temporary marks of the research delimit the period in which São Paulo began an accelerated process of population growth and expansion of the urban spot, which provoked countless urbanistic and social interventions that would redraw the urban space and its operation, echoing directly in the phenomenon of the floods. The initial hypothesis is that, in the period, the social impact of the floods expanded, affecting, mainly, the popular areas of the city.(AU)
