Abstract

This research proposes to analyse how conservative politics and republicans from the last quarter of the nineteenth century used the image of the conspirators from Minas Gerais to legitimate their thoughts. Monarchists and republicans would have searched in a bit unknown past of the Conjuração Mineira, an inspiration and respectively, their projects. To do this we used journalistic evidences that include the period from 1877 until 1889.From the monarchist's side the journals O Arauto de Minas and A Província de Minas were related to the Conservative party; and A Verdade Política, A Actualidade and Liberal Mineiro, periodics that were connected with "Liberal" party. Those groups which aim was to spread among the readers and coreligionists the idea of connection between the members of Inconfidência Mineira and the Brazilian Empire. This association was based on the presupposition of the conspirators: independence and freedom; two things that were fulfilled in 1822.Taking the Republic into consideration, A Pátria Mineira, a newspaper from from São João del-Rei defends the hypothetical republican orientation of the conspirators. Therefore, the association between the conspirators and the new regimen appears which would begin in 1889 and would become one of the most important supports.Considering the theory and method we based our research in the authors Roger Chartier, Bronislaw Baczko and Raoul Girardet, whose some texts allows us to understand how the uses and representation of the conjurados, beside their symbolical ones could help the politicians who wanted to use, in the politics and ideological way, the images that was able to aspire to defend the monarchist regimen or to legitimate republics one.
