Abstract

The study of paleosols is an important tool for the comprehension of continental sedimentary deposits, specially considering the existence of few products of interaction of substrate and atmosphere in the geological record. Its field application comprises subjects such as stratigraphy and paleoclimatology. The doctorate project of the candidate deals with the study of pre-vegetation floodplains. In this context the study of paleosols gains importance, as the understanding of the environmental conditions during the deposition of these units can be greatly improved by studies of the genesis of paleosols found in these sedimentary deposits. The candidate will have the supervision of Professor G.J. Retallack, who is an expert in the study of paleosols and also has special interest and experience in the study of paleosols of Precambrian and early Paleozoic ages. The host institution, the University of Oregon, has an adequate infrastructure for the project execution, with state of the art labs for materials characterization. The candidate will develop skills on the study of paleosols, and perform analyzes on samples collected in sedimentary successions of the Cambrian to Ediacaran transition from the Camaquã Basin (Southern Brazil). The collected data will be the subject of an original case study on Brazilian paleosols. Thus, the candidate intends to acquire information that will contribute to the improvement of sedimentary models regarding floodplains deposits, which are the main subject of his doctorate project.
