Abstract

With the increasing deployment of automated meter infrastructure (smart meters and sensors), the amount of available measurements grows unprecedentedly in Distribution Systems (DSs). These happenings have motivated the development of state estimators for real-time monitoring of DSs, in order to obtain a more reliable data base for the implementation of various smart grid applications. However, the developed DS state estimators do not consider all the characteristics of DSs. This project proposes the development and computational implementation of a three-phase state estimator specific for DSs that enables an adequate treatment to all the characteristics of these systems. The proposed state estimator will allow: analysis of unbalanced systems with single-phase and three-phase loads; treatment of radial and meshed systems in a unified framework with the same precision; all realistic distribution system modeling details, considering the various types of transformer and load connections; treatment of several types of measurements (SCADA measurements, virtual measurements, pseudo-measurements and synchronized phasor measurements), weighting them in according to these precisions. To develop the proposed state estimator several studies will be performed focusing mainly in the following points: three-phase weighted least square state estimator formulations and its variations; three-phase DS modeling; the inclusion of synchronized phasor measurements in the process of three-phase state estimation.
