Abstract

Following the development of undergraduate and master projects, both supported by FAPESP (processes 2010/12298-6 and 2011/03728-0, respectively), this study aims to assess the conservation of stone monuments with the application of consolidants using non-destructive methods. The object of this study is the Itararé Sandstone, which constitute the façade of the Municipal Theatre of São Paulo, located downtown at Praça Ramos de Azevedo. This stone poses great difficulty of conservation due to the presence of expansive clay in its constitution. In this study, the use of most appropriate water repellents and consolidants considering the chemistry of the stone and weathering attacks will be evaluated regarding durability, depth of penetration, weather resistance and color modification. These parameters will be evaluated by using ultrasound equipment, a spectrophotometer, Karsten tubes, permeability tests and a weathering chamber. The main goal is to select the products most suitable to best prevent alterations in the color of sandstone, and to increase the durability of this stone, which is very sensitive to alterations due to its mineralogical constitution.
