Abstract

Allelochemicals are compounds produced by some plants as secondary metabolites and they constitute a promising source of bioactive molecules that can be used in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, mainly in organic systems. Among the tropical botanic families, Annonaceae has showed great potential as a source of biopesticides due to the large number of secondary compounds with diversified chemical structures in its different parts. In our screening program in order to obtain bioactive allelochemicals from Neotropical Annonaceae, promising bioactivities of ethanolic extracts from seeds of four Brazilian Annona species (A. montana, A. mucosa, A. muricata and A. sylvatica) against stored pest species were verified. So, these results motivated us to assess their activities on other economically importance agriculture pests, especially on insect pests that occur in organic farming, an increasingly interesting niche of market. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the lethal and sublethal effects of selected seed extracts from Brazilian Annona species against the cabbage looper Trichoplusia ni L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), an important field and greenhouse pest of cruciferous plants in Brazilian and Canadian conditions. Moreover, we will compare the bioactivity of these extracts with the recently registered commercial bioinsecticide based on botanical extract of A. squamosa (Anosom®), which has the acetogenin annonin (10,000 ppm) as active ingredient.
