Historical transformations and ethno-cognition: an intergenerational analysis of quilombolas ecological knowledge in Vale do Ribeira (SP)

Abstract

In Brazil such as in another countries, rural populations have experienced drastic changes on its lifestyle. In this historical context, the transmission and the transformations of Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) have been considered important themes concerning ethno-ecologica studies worldwide. In this project, we will analyze the changes in the quilombola's LEK of the Ribeira Valley (São Paulo State, Brazil) related to economic and socio-cultural transformations of last five decades in that population. The LEK competence of locals will be analyzed as a function of age, formal educational level, time of residence in the community, and time of residence in the community before the changes above mentioned. Regarding the ecological aspects of twelve large mammals of Atlantic Forest, the LEK competence of residents will be inferred using two independent ways: (1) the repertoire variety of interviewees about specie's diet, gathered through free-listing technique; (2) and the "competence score" - from Consensus Analysis -, using questionnaires with dichotomous (yes/no) responses. In this sense, the principal aim of this project is contribute to the understanding about changes on the local population lifestyle and its consequences to the LEK, a topic of ethno-ecological research not yet investigated in the context of rural/traditional communities in Brazil.
