This research project aims at sketching the general outline of a general theory of imagination, starting from a synthetic reappraisal of the analyses Ricoeur devoted to that question throughout his philosophical career. That project, on the one hand, is in the line of research of the book I wrote in 2006, and which was devoted to a philosophical interpretation of the discussion between Ricoeur and Derrida about the question of the metaphor ("Ricoeur, Derrida. L'Enjeu de la métaphore", Paris, P.U.F, 2006) and on the other hand, it is a direct extension of my doctorate thesis, entitled :" L'Imagination ou la tension de l'agir" (Une genèse de la philosophie ricoeurienne de l'imagination dans la "Philosophie de la volonté") defended in 2009 at the University of Paris I, Panthéon Sorbonne, under the supervision of Professor Renaud Barbaras. In that sense, the main object of the present research would be to contribute to reinstate the concept of imagination, which has often been neglected and discredited in contemporary philosophy, because of its fuzzy outlines and its uses in very heterogeneous domains. By taking Ricoeur's reflection as a base for research, the aim would be to show that this concept may have, on the contrary, a heuristic value, not only for a theory of human action, or an hermeneutics of social life, but also for an accurate understanding of poetic invention.
