Abstract

This research analyzes the architecture of urban churches remnants of colonial and imperial state of São Paulo, observing the spatial and architectural transformations occurring in the same building since the first copies around the year 1600, until 1870, the year of the First Vatican Council that guided changes in temples, analyzing also changes during the period of eclecticism, which lasted until the end of the first half of the twentieth century, when some of these temples suffered minor renovations and stylistic interventions. To do so, provides an overview of the economic times of the captaincy after province, after São Paulo and seeks to understand how the periods of greater or lesser wealth, coupled with prevailing tastes and artistic movements influenced architecture and the formal solutions of churches paulistas . Search still understand the importance artistic and stylistic representation of Catholic churches and for selected cities and highlight the architectural qualities of more traditional temples, with interest to investigate the recurring characteristics over a temple or municipality. Intends thereby documenting and inventorying architects, artists, carvers, sculptors and painters who have excelled in the cities surveyed.
