Abstract

This research of Scientific Initiation aims to highlight the cultural dialogues between Europe and America, expressed in the reception and reproduction of European artistic models in colonial Brazil. To this end, the object of study is the "Allegory of the Four Continents'' located in an old Baroque chapel of the Church of Bom Jesus de Itu and attributed to the Father Jesuíno of Mount Carmel (1764-1819). In correlation to other works located on Brazilian soil and to prints and engravings, we seek the analytical, historical and aesthetic perception of painting, in an attempt to expand the pictorial work of Jesuino beyond what was called "sertanist Baroque'', associating his local representation with global perspectives.Starting from the need to reread the work of Mário de Andrade first and most complete biography work of the painter priest (ANDRADE, 1945, 1963) seeks to articulate primordial studies to recent investigations. Consequently, it is also intended to connect the local history to other geographical contexts, review the primary documentation studied and thus highlight elements invisibilized in the history of colonial São Paulo. Therefore, in order to update the bibliography and the look, considering the advances in the field of global and connected histories and the challenge of decolonization, it is intended to expose the results of a transdisciplinary experience in Art History, privileging the understanding of Jesuino's relevance in the colonial sacred art and the cultural dialogues present in his works. Thus, also contribute to the expansion of the studies proposed by the Projeto Jovem Pesquisador FAPESP "Baroque Encrypted: Cultural Plurality in Art and Architecture of Missions in the State of São Paulo (1549-1760)'', in progress at FAU-USP.
