Abstract In order to contribute towards to the theoretical foundations of Geography and, more specifically, of the epistemology of Biogeography, this research seeks to understand the importance of the geographical factors of reality acquire with the theoretical elaboration process of transmutation of living beings systematized by British naturalist Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882). The analysis will be carried out from a thematic approach applied in his works through primary sources such as correspondence, books and manuscripts, mainly from the period immediately after arrival of HMS Beagle until the publication of his revolutionary book On the origins of species by means of natural selection; wherefore, 1837-1859. Therefore, this research asks about the importance of the geographic conditions in the explanation, under the Darwin´s evolution vision, of shapes and the diversity of living beings. This attempt will have to research which ontological and teleological theory adopted to his new interpretation of the laws who governing the evolution, after all, the role of distribution and the spatial determinations of the living beings in Darwin demanded an effort by a radical rearrangement the then theoretical notions of form and essence and the causes and purposes of life. | |
