Abstract

Terebellidae and Trichobranchidae are selective deposit-feedings, often inhabiting mucous tubes with agglutinated particles such as sand, stones and shell fragments. These animals are easily recognized by the presence of multiple grooved buccal tentacles, covering a wide area around the tube. On the other hand, Sabellidae live in tubes made of secreted mucous, and inhabit virtually all marine environments, where they are easily recognized by the presence of a radiolar crown sometimes very colorful. Although these animals are abundant, diverse and generally conspicuous, taxonomic knowledge about the Terebellidae, Trichobranchidae and Sabellidae occurring along the Brazilian coast is still limited, restricted mainly to studies in the Southeast and South, and virtually unknown in the northeastern coast and deep-water environments. So far, 43 species of Terebellidae, 7 of Trichobranchidae and 42 of Sabellidae were reported in the country. The aim of this study is to develop a taxonomic survey of the species of families Terebellidae, Trichobranchidae and Sabellidae on the Brazilian coast, from Sao Paulo to Paraiba, providing detailed and illustrated descriptions for all species found. Thus, the aim of the internship abroad is to check the identifications already done and compare the Brazilian specimens with animals from the both, collection of the Australian Museum and specimens that will be required on loan from museums and other international institutions, especially European and American. Nearly 1500 specimens were identified, belonging to 33 species of Terebellidae, 7 of Trichobranchidae and 29 of Sabellidae, among which, 33 identifications must be confirmed. (AU)
