Abstract

Between 1825 and 1850, the bilateral relationship among Brazil and Portugal was intense. This relationship was dominated by issues directly related to the African Slave Trade in the South Atlantic. To Portugal of that second quarter of century, the Slave Trade was a major theme of his overseas policy because the Project of "Regeneration" or, in other words, the reform of the Portuguese State and his Overseas Empire passed by the problem of Extracontinental Slave Trade.Portugal hoped to consolidate its hold over the remaining colonial possessions, particularly under Africa, preventing the direct relatins between Brazil and the African Continent, especially with the colony of Angola which fell all the expectations of regenerating of the Portuguese State afther the Brazilian Independence. For this reason, the relations between Portugal and Brazil in that period exceeded the habitual bilateral scope, prevailing, in fact, a unusual triangular character. The study of Luso-African-Brazilian relations during the process of "regeneration" of the Niniteenth Portuguese State is, therefore, the theme of this project. (AU)
