Abstract

A cross-sectional study will be conducted. The aim of the investigation is to verify the prevalence of periodontal disease in hepatic patients requiring liver transplantation, as well as the influence of periodontal disease on the levels of hepatic function markers. The target population comprises hepatic disease subjects requiring liver transplantation, from Hospital Albert Einstein, who receive dental treatment in the Center for Special Patients (FOUSP). Fifty consecutive hepatic subjects will be included. The investigators will have access to all subjects' laboratory exams conducted in Hospital Albert Einstein: aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, prothrombin, complete hemogram, creatinine, and MELD (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease). A calibrated examiner will perform a complete periodontal examination in all included subjects. The prevalence of the periodontal disease will be assessed, and periodontitis subjects will be compared to non-periodontitis subjects, regarding levels of hepatic function markers, in order to verify a possible influence of periodontal infection in the levels of these markers.(AU)
